Our Story

Bridge, cake, pub — one name, three claims to it

The Lammy sits on the corner of Queen and Ferry Streets, at the town end of the Lamington Bridge. That bridge opened on 30 October 1896 — one of the first concrete bridges built in Australia, designed to sit low over the Mary River so the floods run straight over the top of it.

It was named for the 2nd Baron Lamington, Governor of Queensland. The same man most people credit with the lamington cake. The pub took its name from the bridge at the end of the street.

According to the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Maryborough Pub Trail, a hotel first stood on this site in 1864 — trading as the Ariadne, after the ship that brought the first immigrants direct from England to the Port of Wide Bay.

That ship was real. The Ariadne, 670 tons, Captain J. Brown, sailed from Liverpool on 5 June 1862 and landed 259 immigrants at Maryborough that October. Between 1862 and 1890, more than 21,000 immigrants came ashore here.

The hotel has been in the same family since 2003.
